Panic and Fear are synonymous. According to the definitions in the Universal English Dictionary:
FEAR – a feeling of alarm or disquiet caused by the expectation of danger, pain, disaster or the like. Terror. Dread.
PANIC – (informal) to “press or push the panic button” is to react to an emergency by taking hasty action.
Panic buttons, klaxons, warning sirens have been around for an age. If you think back historically fires, smoke signals and horns were used to alert people of possible dangers.
From whistles, personal alarms to high-tech solutions we have all come across some form of panic button system.
Regardless of their mechanism of operation, cost, simplicity or complexity they all have one common purpose – to alert others of danger (to you or them) and to summon help.
How do you chose the correct panic button system for you?
That really depends on a number of personal circumstances, such as;
- Your level of fear/anxiety. Perhaps you live in a wealthy, ‘safe’ country with an excellent law enforcement system, rule of law and law-abiding citizens in which case you may feel no need for a panic button system. If that’s the case you are truly blessed and may you remain so.
- Your budget – what can you afford?
- Do you prefer “low-tech” or “high-tech”. Which is easier to use (for you)?
Whistles are very easy to use but have obvious limitations. Smart phone apps are more complex and may be harder to to use but may offer several advantages over the whistle.
Whistles for example alert everyone within earshot but are non-specific while apps have a much broader (ie you can communicate with people very far away) and are more targeted at a specific group of responders. This may be the emergency services, a local community watch, a security company or your family and friends.
- Which one will you have on you at the time?
This is a key question which we will delve into deeper in another article.
- How impactful you believe your panic button system will be in your circumstances.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution and good personal defensive strategies will have multiple layers to deal with varying circumstances. You need to carefully and critically consider the pro’s and con’s of each.
